Caring for Your Temporary Crown
Now that we’ve placed a temporary crown, it’s important to follow these recommendations to ensure the success of your final restoration:
Chewing and Eating
If we used an anesthetic to place a temporary crown, avoid chewing until the numbness has completely worn off to avoid accidentally biting your lip, cheek or tongue.
To keep your temporary crown in place, avoid eating hard or sticky foods, chewy bread, and especially avoid chewing gum and taffy. If possible, chew only on the opposite side of your mouth from where the temporary crown was placed.
Brushing and Flossing
With a temporary crown, brush normally but floss very carefully. Remove floss by pulling through from the side in order to prevent removal of the temporary crown. If your teeth are sensitive to hot, cold or pressure, use desensitizing toothpaste. In most cases, this sensitivity is normal while a temporary crown is in place.
Medication and Discomfort
Take antibiotics or other medication only as directed.
When to Call
It is not a dental emergency if your temporary crown comes off; however, it will need to be placed back on your tooth. It is very important for the proper fit of your final crown that your temporary stays in place. If your temporary crown falls out, save it and call us at your next availability so we may reserve time on our schedule to re-cement it.
